Legislators Close Ears and Refuse to Listen to the Facts

What I wouldn’t give to walk into any Democrat office at the Capitol and announce that all their staff was being replaced by 8th graders. Oh, the whining and gnashing of teeth!  I can hear them squeal “But middle school kids don’t know ANYTHING about running a legislative office!”  Waaaah!

Well, the Legislature doesn’t know anything about creating jobs or basic economics because they impose stupid, unrealistic constraints on California businesses all the time.  Every.  Damn.  Day.

Yesterday, dozens of industry leaders came to the Capitol and voiced their opposition to a bill built around a mandate that cannot be accomplished in the real world – in other words, it’s physically impossible.  But Judiciary Committee members blew past the expertise and voted the bill out of committee, making us wonder whether a basic competency requirement should be a qualification for seeking public office.

The bill in question is AB 2047 (Bauer-Kahan/D), which mandates 3D printer manufacturers install state-approved “firearm blocking” technology.  The committee members were not persuaded by those in opposition, who bluntly testified that there is no current, reliable technology that can accurately detect “firearm blueprint algorithms.”

David Tobin, the Executive Director of the Community Manufacturing Initiative and Marleen Vogelaar, CEO of Thangs, a 3D printing marketplace, represented the industry in opposition to AB 2047.  Both made it clear that the bill’s supporters lacked a basic understanding of 3D-printing technology. To drive the point home, Tobin presented a visual demonstration featuring an object that seemingly changed shape depending on the viewing angle, highlighting the difference between what a 3D printer can process and what it cannot.

Tobin commented, “It’s already illegal to do everything in this bill…you can’t make itillegaler…”  But hey – this is California and we do things differently here!  It’s yet another accurate, yet ridiculous example of just how the Golden State legislates.

Following the compelling testimony by Tobin and Vogelaar (plus dozens of others), the author was asked by a fellow Democrat Senator to address the concerns raised by the opposition.  What we got was a Kamala Harris-style word salad – nothing but gibberish that answered nothing.  It did, however, make it abundantly clear that Bauer-Kahan knows a big, fat zero about guns or the regulation thereof.  It was embarrassing, but in the end, it didn’t matter.

The Democrat committee members all voted aye, toeing the mandatory party line and all for what?  To appease Moms Demand Action or the Brady folks, because it sure as heck won’t make a tiny dent when it comes to “gun violence.”

In her opener, the author indicated that this bill was “close to her heart.” – because stopping “gun violence” is one of her passions.  If she were serious about protecting the innocent and the vulnerable in California, she’d be more concerned about what happens when a bad guy uses a gun, rather than lawful citizens and 3D hobbyists.

The Left must enjoy getting knocked around in court because this is where things are headed if Newsom signs this bad boy.  Stay tuned.
